The plight of Hampshire CC's 700,000 tonne household waste problem is highlighted in The Guardian's 'Dustbin of Europe' series (p25).

The report says that Hampshire has a lack of suitable sites to tip rubbish and is looking at other schemes for waste disposal such as recycling and incineration.

The council is trying to get planning permision for incinerators to burn 360,000 tonnes of waste annually, but faces stiff opposition from environmental groups.

Hampshire is not alone and councils in the rest of the country are facing the same problems, the report says.
