Social security secretary Harriet Harman has promised action to halt domestic violence against women, reported the Independent on Sunday (p2).

Ms Harman told the Labour party's annual women's conference in Nottingham, that she will work with local authorities to spread best practice and help identify gaps in provision to help victims of assaults in the home.

Local partnerships between police and councils would be expected to audit the incidence and nature of domestic violence in their area and develop a strategy to reduce it.
