Lord Toby Harris has defended an arrangement which saw Haringey LBC paying for taxis he took while working as chairman of the Association of London Government.

The recently installed chair of the new Metropolitan Police Authority found himself in The Sun last week after reports that he took £88 round-trip taxi rides to Wembley Stadium. Getting there by tube would have cost around£4.

Both Haringey and Lord Harris insist his workload with the council and the ALG meant the fares were justified under Haringey's expenses code.

Delegates at a reception at this week's Local Government Association clearly took the matter extremely seriously, with some shouting 'Taxi for Lord Harris! Taxi for Lord Harris!' at around midnight.
