Nancy Johnson, head of Birmingham City Council's women's unit, has left her job with an £11,500 pay-off in the middle of an investigation into her management of the unit, reports The Birmingham Post (p1, p9). The investigation has now been halted.

The council set up an investigating sub-committee to look into accusations of gross misconduct and mismanagement against Ms Johnson, which she denies. The accusations relate to expense claims for telephone bills and a grant for Birmingham's Women's Festival.

Ms Johnson was the first black woman to hold a top post at Birmingham. The council is yet to make a decision on whether to replace her.
