Elizabeth West is retiring from Charlotte Sharman School, Southwark, and the deputy head, Pauline Milton, is quitting the teaching profession following alleged hate campaigns against them.

The Daily Telegraph (September 21, p5) reported that a campaign of abuse and intimidation is believed to have been pursued by some parents who object to the primary school's plan, carried by a vote, to change from local authority to grant-maintained status. There are also said to be disputes about transfers to secondary schools.

A security guard was hired this year and surveillance cameras installed. The head and her deputy are escorted to the railway station.

They plan to leave in December, although a petition organised to support them has collected the names of hundreds of parents and children.
