School heads fear that government moves to clamp down on early retirements will leave them unable to recruit new blood and left with a resentful rump of teachers in their mid-50s who had expected to go early , The Guardian reports (p6).

The paper says that heads last week rounded on education minister Eric Forth at a stormy meeting to protest against the changes.

From April, local education authorities, schools and colleges will have to bear the extra cost of early retirements which have been met by the teachers' Superannuation scheme.
