The Health Development Agency has produced a report outlining the benefits of health impact assessments in local planning.

The report details how health impact assessments can make an important contribution to improving the well-being of the population.

The assessments would help council planners in their role to reduce health inequalities and assist health bodies when dealing with matters such as the building of a new hospital wing.

The publication covers how to make advance assessments of the likely effects of planning developments and the distribution of those effects across the population, which the HDA says is vital in making progress towards the targets for reducing health inequalities.

As well as being useful to those involved in the development of health improvement, modernisation plans, community strategies and neighbourhood renewal strategies, the publication also provides some practical advice and tips for those planning to undertake, commission or promote a HIA.
