Lord Neill's committee on standards in public life begins its inquiry into political funding today, reports BBC Radio Four's Today programme.

The committee will be gathering evidence over the next three months from politicians, political commentators and those who have given donations to political parties.

Lord Neill said: 'One absolute certainty is this: the government has given two pledges which they have got to implement. Number one is a ban on foreign donations. Number two is disclosure at£5,000 limit of giving. So there has got to be legislation. What else goes into the package is an open question.'
