The chief executive of Lambeth LBC, Heather Rabbatts, is one of the hot favourites to become London's new mayor, according to The Guardian (4 April, section 2, p4).

Describing the prospective candidates for the post of mayor, Ms Rabbatts says: 'When you look at them they're all pretty boring white men, and they're older. I feel there's a distance between what they think they represent and what those of us on the ground think we're about.'

She believes the mayor should be politically independent. 'Where is your absolute commitment?' she asks. 'Is it to represent London? In many ways that might accord with a party, but what happens when it doesn't?'

But whether or not she will go for the post is unclear. She says: 'It's a great opportunity, it needs someone who can bring London together but it's a long way ahead - after the referendum this week, there wouldn't be an election until, at the earliest, the end of 1999, so there's a long way to go.'
