The government faced legal problems over the status of the new Herefordshire council, local government minister Paul Beresford told a delegation from Hereford and Worcester yesterday, reports The Birmingham Post (p3).

Sir Paul suggested that local elections due to be held next year should be postponed.

Hereford and Worcester CC deputy leader Peter Pinfield told the paper:

'The consensus was that we should go ahead with the reorganisation as planned but we were very uneasy with what we heard.'
