Local government elections in Hereford and Worcester which take place on May 1, are profiled in the Birmingham Post (p4).

Three separate local government elections will be held, two of which will choose authorities to replace Hereford and Worcester CC which disappears from April next year in local government reorganisation.

Labour group leader on the existing council Peter Pinfield said he hoped the new Worcester CC would be the first Labour-led council in the shire counties, while Conservative leader Cliff Davies said he expected voters to vote on national issues, but hoped they would look too at local policies.

In addition to Labour and Conservative candidates there are 75 local independents contesting council seats.
