Michael Heseltine, President of the Board of Trade, has welcomed the European Commission's announcement that they would be proposing the Highlands and Islands of Scotland and Merseyside for structural fund objective 1 status.

Mr Heseltine said: 'I am very pleased that, following my letter to Bruce Millan earlier this month, the commission has decided to propose the Highlands and Islands and Merseyside for objective 1.

'The final decision on which EC regions are eligible for objective 1 rests with the Council of Ministers. I understand they will be considering their review of the structural funds regulations in the next few months.

'I will continue to press the case for the other areas which I proposed to the commission as candidates for objective 1 status, namely Devon and Cornwall, rural Wales and South Yorkshire'.
