The government has unveiled new powers for trading standards officers in its consumer white paper.

Modern markets, confident consumers contains wide-ranging proposals to crack down on rogue traders and cowboy builders.

These include powers for trading standards officers to seek court injunctions against traders who engage in illegal practices. Bans will be imposed on those who break the injunctions.

Officers would also be granted powers to deal with traders who write unfair clauses into contracts.

The Local Government Association was involved in preparing the white paper.
