The 1997 LGC Management Challenge winner, Hackney LBC, was runner-up in the latest competition but its appreciation was undiminished.

Lesley Lee, head of strategy and commissioning for regulatory services, said: 'I really enjoyed it. I had been concerned about the amount of time I might have to commit to it on the run-up to the day itself but I got a tremendous amount out of doing it, both working with colleagues across my own council who I do not normally work with, but also rising to the challenge of it.'

She said she was pleased to see the skills needed to cope in a high-pressure council such as Hackney translated into a good performance in the Management Challenge.

Pal Singh, then head of financial services and now compliance and exchequer manager, said: 'It was very stimulating, hard work at times, very intense on the day. I think we learned a bit about how to deal with people, how to work in a team. We had not worked as a group before so really it was a very positive experience.'
