An improved pay offer to over 100,000 higher education staff in both blue and white collar grades, could split the unions involved, reports The Independent (p2).

The 7.3% rise over two years to manual workers could satisfy the union sections involved, but officials representing academic staff covered by a two year 5.8% deal are said to have 'severe reservations', reports the paper.

The unions are currently consulting members on the offer ahead of a joint meeting later this week to discuss their next move.
