Highland Council has awarded a£48m contract to ICL, the computer software and services group, to manage its information technology requirements for the next 10 years, reports The Financial Times (p11).

Highland is letting the contract, which it is hoped will save the council£1m a year, under the private finance initiatiave. ICL will update the authority's computer systems while recouping the investment over the life of the contract.

Fifty five council staff will be transferred to ICL as part of the deal, which is estimated to be the biggest of its kind in Scottish local government.
