The contract to manage part of the Essex stretches of the M11 and the M25 has been awarded to Rust Consulting, which has a base in Harlow, reports BBC Essex.

The number of regional agencies is to be cut from 82 to 24 as part of a streamling process by the Highways Agency.

Other contracts for Essex routes will be awarded next month.

Highways Agency spokeswoman Jaqui Wilkinson said the loss of smaller local agencies would not pose problems for roads in Essex. 'We want to introduce competition into managing our network. It has traditionally been carried out by local authorities without competition. We think that the private sector has a lot to offer in addition to the public sector.

'And also we want to make the management of our network more strategic, more focused on the road user'.
