Staff at Hinckley and Bosworth BC are being given free visors to protect their eyes from the sun during next month's eclipse, reports The Leicester Mercury.

The council has bought 200 pairs of the 60p eclipse-viewing specs in a bid to minimise the risk of injury to employees on 11 August.

Safety officer Frank Warren said: 'The eclipse is an event which is a forseeable one and employees will be at work on the day.

'What we are doing is being proactive in making people aware of the dangers of looking at the sun unprotected. We could say 'don't look at it' but I think that would be unreasonable.'
