A government hit squad is poised to take over Ealing LBC's social services department after a damning report concluded that failings 'beyond belief' put vulnerable children at risk, reported the
Independent on Sunday (p10).
The council will hear this week whether the department of health is satisfied with the action plan its councillors delivered on Friday. If it fails to convince government inspectors that the council can put
its own house in order, Whitehall will send its own team to overhaul social services, something which has been threatened but has never been done before.
Ealing director of social services Roy George quit his post last week following the social services inspectorate's damning report. A council spokeswoman said the decision was taken because Mr George 'could not guarantee to devote the amount of energy needed to steer the department throughout the considerable changes required'.
