The Tory manifesto will include proposals to set up special 'hit squads' to force councils to sell empty homes, The Sunday Telegraph says (Feb 16, p2).

Any council with more than 3% of its stock vacant would be visited by a hit squad to ensure all its houses which have been empty for more than 12 months are sold.

The scheme, which is expected to launched by prime minister John Major at his Conservative Central Council speech next month, is designed to highlight 'Labour's housing failure'.
