A veteran Birmingham City Council Labour member who compared his group's political restructuring plans to Hitler's path to tyranny has adopted a vow of silence - on the advice of the council leadership.

Les Byron, a councillor for 26 years, said the proposed one-party cabinet would lead to secret decision-making and had already sparked furious in-fighting and plotting within the Labour group.

He told a local paper: 'There is no room in local government for decisions being made behind locked doors to exclude observation by the public and media. This is exactly how Hitler started.'

This week Mr Byron said he had been advised locally not to discuss the issue further - advice he intends following until after the plans return for further examination by councillors.

Council leader Albert Bore was unavailable but he has defended the proposals as necessary changes for streamlining decision-making.
