Setting up the Scottish parliament has cost more than£3 million so far, with a further£38.5m to be spent by 2000, the government said this week.

Junior Scottish minister Lord Sewel said in a written reply that capital expenditure to acquire the site at Holyrood and other costs had totalled£3.14m over the nine months to December.

Scottish home affairs and devolution minister Henry McLeish said 172 new posts had so far been advertised externally to serve the body.
