Essex Fire Authority's plans to axe 16 firefighters' jobs, which have led to a series of strikes, have been approved by the home office, reports The Herald (p4).

As the authority's application to redeploy three appliances and remove 16 firefighting posts was approved, home office minister George Howarth said strike action appeared to be regarded as a 'first response' to budget changes.

'Fire services must be subject to the same financial disciplines as other local authority services,' he said.
