Leaked documents from the Home Office reveal that the government is planning to build a further network of detention centres to hold an additional 1,000 asylum seekers and illegal immigrants, according to The Daily Mail (p2).

The government is said to be looking for sites in the Liverpool-Manchester area, around Newcastle upon Tyne and in Scotland.

Plans have already been announced to raise the total capacity of detention centres to 3,000 through new centres in Bedfordshire and Kent and by expanding existing facilities at Gatwick and Heathrow airports. The additional centres proposed in the new document would take that total to 4,000.
