Home secretary Michael Howard today gave his support to 'All Different, All Equal', a European youth campaign against racism which was launched today.

'We in the UK have the most comprehensive anti-discrimination legislation in Europe. The government deplores any form of discrimination and will continue with the fight to stamp it out completely.

'Most British citizens respect their fellow neighbours regardless of race or religion. However there is still a small number of people who do not.

'Background, race or religion should not be artificial barriers. Everyone in Europe should be able to make the most of their talents.

'Today's society is multi-cultural and is all the richer for it. This is the society which our young people will grow up in. And it is a society which they should be proud to be a part of.

'Racism has no place in the UK or in Europe. I wish you every success with the campaign.'
