Police have arrested three asylum seekers from Kosovo after Hounslow LBC housing officers suspected them of fraudulently trying to obtain help under the National Assistance Act.

The two men and one woman were arrested last week after police were called to Hounslow civic centre by staff from the homeless persons unit who believed the trio were already claiming support from another council. The three have been bailed by police until next month.

The council said: 'The vast majority of asylum seekers have suffered tragedies and trauma. The council is committed to assisting genuine asylum seekers. However, where people seek to abuse the system we are determined to stamp out fraud and deal with bogus claimants firmly.'

Hounslow was unable to provide further details for legal reasons.
