The work of housing action trusts in improving run-down council estates is examined in The Guardian (Society, p8).

Residents of Brent LBC's Stonebridge estate voted for a HAT to regenerate their area and over the next seven years, with a budget of£165m, it aims to improve housing and job prospects for the estate's 4,000 residents.

It is hoped that the scheme will help the community to become more self-confident and more able to take control of aspects of housing and community facilities if it wants to.
