London will pioneer a central computer register in a new bid by the government to clampdown on benefits fraud, the Evening Standard reports (p6).

The register will collate claims and cross-check names and addresses in an attempt to catch thousands suspected of making multiple claims for housing benefits.

Regulations were being laid in Parliament today which should allow the scheme to be running by the autumn.

The paper reports that Westminster City Council suspects that a large slice of the £82m it pays out a year in housing benefit is to bogus claimants.
