John Battle (Lab Leeds West) asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what has been the gross public and net investment in housing in real terms at 1993 prices in each year since 1979.

Giving the figures Sir George Young commented that since 1989 some £2 billion of private finance had been levered in to support the Housing Corporation's programme.

The figures (5 November col 481) show that gross expenditure in 1993-94 prices saw the highest expenditure in 1979-80 at £8.6 billion falling to £4.8 billion in 1990-91. Expenditure in 1991-92 was £4.7 billion and in the last financial year is provisionally estimated at £5 billion.
