Shadow environment secretary Archie Norman was forced to clarify Conservative housing policy after a report that he believed pregnant teenagers should be refused council flats and told to live with their parents.
In an interview in the Daily Telegraph, Mr Norman complained young people thought they could emulate Calista Flockhart, the star of Ally McBeal, who recently adopted a baby and lives a lavish lifestyle.
He told the newspaper: 'The first question we would ask is: 'Why can't a young girl continue to live with her parents?'. Our priority should be to ensure there is real pressure on youngsters who get pregnant to stay at home.'
The clarifying statement said decisions over waiting list priority should be left to local discretion.
