A proposed new strategic housing role for councils has won their overwhelming backing, a Local Government Association survey has said.
An LGA task group asked authorities for their views on the strengthened role for councils in housing policy proposed by the government last year. Some 82% of authorities agreed housing strategy would be well integrated into their community strategy, which they have a duty to develop in future.
Paul Bettison (Con), chair of the association's housing executive, said:
'We have worked hard to encourage councils to develop their role as a champion of consumers. For even though local authorities do not always directly provide housing, they do provide a wide range of related services.'
Most councils said they would give priority to support services for vulnerable people.
