Equal opportunities minister Alan Howarth, writing to leading organisations of and for disabled people as well as business, trade

unions and local government, has called for suggestions for membership of the new Disability Rights Task Force.

He said:

'The government is moving ahead rapidly to establish proper rights for people with disabilities and the Task Force will play a crucial role in this. The task force's membership will represent a wide range of views, drawing on additional expertise as required. At least half of the members will be from disability organisations.

'For practical reasons the task force will need to be limited to around 15-20 people but there will be opportunity for members to consult informally with their own networks. I envisage that the work of the task force will lead to wide ranging consultation and an important public debate to ensure that our policy is truly effective in the interests of disabled people, the economy and society as a whole.

'It is likely that the task force will work for up to 18 months.'

Notes

1. The appointments will be unpaid but travel and subsistence expenses will be met.

2. Suggestions for membership are sought by 28 October.
