The task of policing the new 48-hour working week ruling is likely tobe handed to the Health and Safety Inspectorate, reports the Daily Mail (p10).

A new inspectorate is not going to be set up because of cost, the paper reports. It is ironic that the HSE will be given the job since the government has argued that the working time directive should not be classed as a health and safety issue.

Ministers think civil rather than criminal sanctions will be enough to enforce the directive, says the Mail.
