The Department of Health has turned to local government for its most senior social care post, in the shape of Newham LBC social services director Kathryn Hudson.

Ms Hudson has been appointed national director for social care and one of her key roles will be strengthening the department's relationship with councils.

Health secretary Dr John Reid announced the creation of the post at last year's national social services conference, as a response to the shake-up in responsibilities for social care within Whitehall.

The DoH has lost control over child social care to the Department for Education & Skills, while the Social Services Inspectorate was recently replaced by the independent Commission for Social Care Inspection.
