London local authorities and their contractors issued 2,250,000 parking tickets in the year ending April 1995 - 200,000 more than the previous 12 months.

The Evening Standard reports (p17) that the total is 750,000 below the target set by the boroughs.

The Parking Committee, in a report out today, criticises councils over delays in following up tickets and handling appeals.

If the boroughs do not become more efficient, the report warns, the government may limit the time in which the council can respond to an appeal - under the Road Traffic Act 1991 no time limit is specified.
