Humberside CC has denied claims that it has embarked on a final spending spree as it approaches abolition, reported the Sunday Times (p5).

The paper cited complaints by Conservatives on the Labour controlled council about last-minute pay rises, extravagant entertaining and pet projects.

Council leader Maggie Smith defended the council against Conservative criticisms, telling the paper: 'We have not breached any capping limits, or any rules and regulations.

'All our spending goes through committees and it is all out in the open. We have spent within the limits. I regret those limits have been as low as they were.'
