Judith Hunt, chief executive of the Local Government Management Board, will step down when the board is spilt into two agencies.

Ms Hunt said she had not intended to seek renewal of her contract when it expires in October 1999, and the decision by the Local Government Association to divide the board into agencies for training/development and negotiations had brought forward her departure.

'It feels like the right time to move on. I have a personal interest in the broader employment and training issues and I will be looking for new challenges,' she said.

She was committed to working with LGA chief executive Brian Briscoe to see through the reorganisation of the board and would continue to work on new projects.

Directorships of the two new agencies will be advertised later this month.
