A Doncaster MBC member who made false expenses claims totalling almost£500 was handed a three-month suspended prison sentence when he appeared before magistrates yesterday, reports The Yorkshire Post (p3).

Terry Sellars admitted four charges of false accounting and was told he would have been jailed but for his poor health.

The court heard that Mr Sellars, who wore a neck brace and supported by a wheeled frame, admitted making false claims when attening conference on council business in 1995 and 1996. He asked for two similar offences to be considered.

Local government rules require the former vice-chair of the housing committee to resign his seat immediately.
