Strathclyde police are probing bribery allegations made by a councillor about land deals at North Lanarkshire Council.

A spokeswoman said claims had been made to the police, who would look into them 'with a view to an investigation'.

Administration director John O'Hagan said: 'The council has been advised that an elected member has approached Strathclyde Police directly with a number of allegations.'

He said the council would co-operate fully with police enquires.

Housing strategies have failed to pay attention to the needs of older residents, a government advisory

body has said.

The Housing & Older People Development Group said council's housing strategies emphasised the needs of young working people and missed out other groups.

It said older people's housing needs had also been ignored in regional housing strategies.

Former Strathclyde RC chief executive Sir Robert Calderwood has died aged 74. Sir Robert took the top post at the council in 1980 and retired in 1992.
