An Independent leader (p15) comments on the Empty Homes Agency report published today which finds that three quarters of a million are lying empty in Britain - six wasted vacant properties for every homeless family.

The government may be offering about £15m towards the problem but by leaving 15% of their residential properties to lie vacant, central government departments are the worse offenders than private landlords or local councils, says the leader.

Capital assets, belonging to taxpayers, are being wasted on inefficient management and appointing a civil service task force to deal with the problem is no enough.
