Proposals by an independent panel could lead to big increase allowances for members of West Midlands metropolitan authorities, reports The Birmingham Post (p1).
The six-strong independent panel chaired by John Hawksley, president of Birmingham Chamber of Commerce, recommends an increase of basic allowances from an average of £2,221 to £7,980, plus up to £5,760 for every major committee chair.
The changes would, for example, double the money given to Birmingham leader Theresa Stewart and Walsall leader Dave Church, says the Post.
Members of the West Midlands joint committee, which represents the seven metropolitan authorities, will discuss the panel's proposals tomorrow.
