The Guardian reported (June 15, p13) that thousands of run down homes on inner city housing estates are to be transferred to private landlords in return for multi-million pound revamps.

The government has insisted, said the paper, that £174m in grants for demolition, new buildings, repairs and renovation on 29 estates will only be provided if tenants vote to move their homes out of local authority control.

Among the councils affected are: Hackney, Sheffield, Durham and Sandwell. Other authorities - Tower Hamlets, Lambeth, Newham and Merton LBCs and Stoke and Tameside have also decided to give up some of their run down estates so they can be modernised.
