The Benefit Fraud Inspectorate's strong links with local government have been key to its success, according to director general Chris Bull.

Marking the publication of the inspectorate's annual report, he said 23 council inspection reports had been published, while a further 46 are either ongoing or due to be started by November.

'In addition we expect to announce a further 27 inspections to be started before April 2000,' he said.

'All inspected local authorities have developed detailed action plans based on our recommendations setting out their commitment to improving standards.'
