An on-the-spot fine of up to£40 will be the punishment for cyclists caught riding on the pavement under new legislation to be introduced later this year, reports The Daily Telegraph (p2).

Alun Michael, the home office minister, disclosed in a commons written answer that he intended to make cycling on the pavement a fixed penalty offence.

The move is supported by the Association of Chief Police Officers and follows complaints from the public that people riding on the pavement have become an increasing nuisance in some areas.
