The Isle of Wight Council will loose 20 senior managers over the next three months from its community and social services directorate, to meet a £3 million plus shortfall.

The council wants to save over £425,000 from the job cuts. Only eight of the current post-holders are old enough for early retirement.

Five of the island's eight neighbourhood offices, which provide care in the community, may have to close.

'Care in the community is a good idea but the government has refused to fund it,' said John Bowker, committee chair and a member of the Association of County Councils social services committee. 'I blast the government,' he said.
