Housing benefit fraudsters present a growing danger to local government officers, according to Frank Field, chairman of the Commons' social services select committee.

The Labour MP said housing benefit was 'massively riddled with fraud' but most politicans did not understand how sophisticated some of the organised fraudsters were.

'Billions of pounds of tax payers' money could be saved if we could get on top of this aspect,' he said.

'I do not underestimate the task or how unpleasant it would be for some of those working in this area.'

Mr Field said there should be recognition of the danger posed to officers who are charged with rooting out fraud.

Mr Field proposed linking rents to a property's council tax band to stop landlords exploiting the housing benefit system.
