Isle of Wight CC leader Maurice Barton has called for Home Secretary Michael Howard and the Director General of the Prison Service, Derek Lewis, to resign following the escape of three prisoners from the island's Parkhurst Prison, reported BBC Cambridgeshire (Jan 7).

He is angry at Mr Lewis's criticism of prison officers. Mr Lewis said the officers were refusing to co-operate fully with the inquiry into the escape after the Prison Officers Association advised members only to give evidence in writing.

Mr Barton said: 'I think they are most unhelpful comments. I am surprised a man in his position should come to the Isle of Wight and make this sort of attack on people who over the years have done a very good job for the community in the prisons'.
