Islington LBC has written to its 35,000 tenants warning they will be thrown out of their homes unless they pay their rent arrears, the Highbury & Islington Express reports (p2).

In an attempt to reduce a£10 million debt, the council is also taking action in the Clerkenwell County Court, with abut 50 cases being dealt with this month.

Staff have been told to take 'firm action' where there are no pay-back arrangements, or where tenants had defaulted on repayents.

The council is also trying to recover£11 million of rent owed by people who have left the borough.
