Islington LBC has the highest debt per resident of any English council, government figures revealed this week.

A written Commons answer on Tuesday from environment minister Sir Paul Beresford said Islington's debt on 31 March 1995 was £5,024 per head.

It was followed by Hackney (£3,979), Tower Hamlets (£3,831), Southwark (£3,522) and Lambeth (£3,472).

Birmingham City Council had the highest overall debt, with £1.29 billion, or £1,277 per head.

The only other council owing more than £1bn was Manchester City Council with £1.17bn.
