Jamie Carswell bows out of politics

  • Comment
Jamie Carswell, one of local government’s foremost voices on housing, is stepping down from council politics.

Cllr Carswell (Lab), deputy mayor at Hackney LBC and London Councils’ housing spokesman, is to become director of strategy and performance at Tower Hamlets LBC’s arm’s-length management organisation.

Cllr Carswell was instrumental in formulating London Councils’ mortgage rescue package and named the 38th most influential person in local government in this year’s LGC50.

He denied rumours he was standing down because Jules Pipe has decided to run for a third term as Hackney mayor.

Labour changed its internal rules this summer to allow elected mayors to stand for third terms.
